Thoughts On The Grammys
That was a surprisingly dignified awards ceremony. I haven’t watched the Grammy awards in years (for good reason). The only things I’ve seen recentlyare clips from the MTV awards, which are usually just a mixture of lip syncing, softcore porn and seizure inducing blinking lights. This wasn’t too bad a show though, Nelly “performance” aside. Most of the winners were actual artists with a slight bit of musical talent. Not that I think the Grammys AT ALL represents music as a whole, but the sensationalism seemed to be missing and that made the show much more bearable. The Boss was good but hey were doing some keyboard effect during The Rising that took away from the song. The Roots surprisingly backed Eminem and kept my interest during his performance. The Simon & Garfunkle reunion was cool and a great way to set the tone for the show. Too bad they didn’t televise Solomon Burke winning his Grammy for BEST contemporary blues album.
The Clash tribute — I enjoyed it. Springsteen and Costello were really into it and Grohl provided a much welcome kick of energy. The song sounded good and the band threw a lot into it’ so I have nothing to complain about there. However its pretty fucking sad that the Clash never actually WON an award while all the members were together, nor that anyone felt they were worth high profile recognition while Strummer was still alive. Oh well, the 4 guitar thing did look pretty badass.
