“A Cheap holiday in other peoples misery!”
So this week seems to be going much better than last. I’ve got my course selection all lined up and I’ve had a change to talk with a few professors about my future. So I’m needless to say less bleak than I was last week (forever to be known as The Days Of Lesser Result And Spirit or something epic like that).
Points of conviction:
1) I really like the Sex Pistols. I realize this now. I’m reading John Lydon’s bio and I understand how amazingly adept that man is at getting a rise out of people. Not just his “enemies” either, when he wants too he can get the punk scene that canonized him to hate him as well. Furthermore, the Pistols were not puppets of their manager as much as they were horribly manipulated and screwed around by him. I don’t question their sincerity as much as some people… so to me it’s just one of those classic rock & roll screw jobs.
2) AFI… My opinion of Sing The Sorrow is not one of shockingly polarized love or hate for this record. When I listened to it for the first time I was surprised the most at how ORDINARY it sounded. With the exception of a few tracks we’ve all heard this before on the last few full lengths. I’m not a fan who’s been with the band from their “old school” days, so this isn’t that “sell out!” sentiment. I’m actually hoping this album DOES grow on me, because I do believe this band is fairly honest in their convictions and I’d have no problem admitting I liked this record.
3) The Tangiers’ debut is so fun. I can’t muster the “rock critic cynicism” to hate this “new wave of rock” (what a stupid label but you know what I mean) since the bands all sound like punk bands with a serious Rolling Stones / Who fixation. Since I suffer from the same affliction, I don’t see what the problem is.
4) Watching the news right now seriously scares me. I have the utmost respect for the French, Russians and Chinese however. I listened to the Security Council speeches on the weekend and they all made a lot of sense. Opposing this war isn’t a matter of “leftism,” it’s a matter of common sense. I have yet to get into a political rant simply because there are so many more eloquent voices than my own on the matter.
5) Speaking of eloquent voices, go read Aubin Paul’s blog. My Punknews.Org co-conspirator shows quite admirable restraint and calmness when dealing with Mr. Bush.
6) Yes, I woke up early. Too early for the bus yet too late to do any serious work. So here I am…
