Audio: Chixdiggit!
My formative years (musically speaking) had an unexplained connection to the great western mecca of Calgary. Two of the first independent Canadian bands I ever saw in a club hailed from that city. One was a fantastic instrumental surf revivalist trio called the Huevos Rancheros and the other was punk quartet Chixdiggit. It probably served me well that the first exposure my teenage self had to “pop-punk” was in the Ramones vein, as opposed to the diluted strain making waves on video stations that year. While the band’s light hearted, often humorous lyrical outlook isn’t something the current crop of kids seem to care for, they’ve won a place of honor in my mind that few others have been able to reach.
After a hiatus of sorts, Chixdiggit is back with a new record titled Pink Razors on Fat Wreck Chords. It’s a bit of a throwback to their first few albums but at the same time it’s wonderfully energetic and modern. The band’s playing in Toronto next week at the Reverb with SNFU, and you really have nowhere else you should be that evening. So here’s to October 25th 1999 at the Fratt House in St. Catherines:
